Clark County (also known as the Southern NV District), where Vegas is located, has specific rules for obtaining a food staff certificate, including the need to enroll in an in-person class. This article outlines the city’s requirements for certification, the renewal process and the prerequisites for workers in other NV counties.

Food Pass Guidelines

In-Person Classes

In Vegas, NV, all new food staff must attend an in-person class approved by the Southern NV Health District (SNHD) within 30 days of starting work. This program covers important topics like proper meal-handling methods, sanitation and avoiding cross-contamination. The goal is to prepare food staff with the knowledge they need to uphold strong safety practices.

Exam and Certification  

After completing the in-person training, participants must pass an exam to receive their Nevada food handler card. The test assesses their understanding of the course material. Upon passing, the card is issued and valid for three years. 

Renewing Food Passes in Vegas

Renewing a food handler certification in Las Vegas involves completing a refresher course and passing an exam. However, unlike the requirements for new Nevada food handlers, renewals can be completed at a facility or through an SNHD-approved online food handler training course

The renewal program covers updates in food safety standards and reinforces critical handling practices. After passing the refresher test, the food handler card is reissued for another three years.

Becoming a Certified Food Safety Manager

Although the state of Nevada does not require handlers to undergo food safety training, it does mandate that anyone overseeing handlers or other service personnel complete the course.

Requirements

To obtain a food manager card in Las Vegas, individuals must complete an accredited educational program and pass an exam. Unlike new handlers, new food managers can complete the class in person or through an online training program.

Managers in Vegas must complete accredited training and pass a test, available online or in person. The exam covers preventing illness, health systems, inspections and regulations. Successful candidates earn a five-year certificate recognized across Nevada. Renewal is required to stay eligible.

Washoe County

In Washoe County, which includes Reno, handlers must complete an online food handler safety training course approved by the Washoe County Health District (WCHD). After finishing the course and passing the exam, individuals can print their Nevada food handlers card, valid for three years.

Other Nevada Counties

Requirements are generally less stringent in counties like Carson City, Douglas and Elko. Most accept online training courses from approved providers. Individuals can print their certificates after completing the course and passing the food handler card test. It's crucial to check with the local health department for specific mandates or legal updates.
